Lee is a strong supporter of animal rights and PETA. Lee wrote Terry Prather, SeaWorld's president to express his displeasure over Tilikum's treatment of Tilikum. Lee felt that the animal ought to be released. He also stated that SeaWorld would not comply since Tilikum is their primary source of the sperm. Lee said he was shocked by SeaWorld's complicated and ill-conceived methods for obtaining Tilikum sperm. Lee concluded that he wished to avoid any more tragedies of trainers getting killed, because these tragedies had resulted from the whales' distaste for captivity.
